This is a fascinating story of a woman, Jeanne Baret, who surely deserves recollection. It is, in a way, not unlike the story of Aphra Behn, which is equally compelling and at least as suspicious in some of its content. Where the truth ends and the myth begins is hard to identify. Perhaps none of it is fictional, but it is definitely the stuff of legend.
